Company Profile

Executive Summary

Excel Precision is a manufacturer of laser interferometer systems and laser sensors for semiconductor photolithography, LCD flat panel manufacturing, MEMS, and factory automation applications. For laser interferometer, Excel Precision brings the high throughput, high accuracy through its patented technology, which leads to low cost without requiring performance tradeoffs. For laser sensor, Excel Precision possesses unique technologies, protected by patents, that enable factories to enhance their automation process, which results in better yields, lower failure rates, and considerable cost savings. The company is setting for strong growth as we deliver products based on these technologies from our 8,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Santa Clara, California.

Company Overview

Industry

The physical dimensions of semiconductors and data storage devices are becoming shrinking by a factor of two for every 4 years. What we used to feel as high-tech 10 years ago has now become low-tech. To name a few examples: DRAM’s, hard disk drives, and microprocessors. With the evolving of technology, the demand for higher resolution, higher accuracy, and higher throughput from production machines is more needed than before. To meet this demand, factory automation becomes a necessity for many industries. The automation process reduces human errors, elongates operation hours of the factory, and improves uniformity of product quality. The two product families that Excel Precision are offering allow factories to implement automation process and meeting the market demands

Market

The primary customers for Excel Precision’s laser interferometer products are equipment manufacturers of semiconductor photolithography, wafer inspection, wafer repair, scanning electronics microscope, liquid crystal display (LCD) flat panels, mask making, and mastering machine for DVD and computer hard disk drive manufacturers.

A secondary customer set for Excel Precision’s products are machine tool / CNC machine calibrations. Excel Precision has been addressing the semiconductor equipment market in the past and is now launching campaigns in CNC machine and machine tool calibrations market.

The laser sensor is a new product recently developed by Excel Precision. Its initial target will be parts alignment, dimension measurement, spindle runout, film thickness measurement, vibration measurement in automation process. Industries that require these in situ measurements are semiconductor front end (wafer inspection, wafer transport, wafer stage alignment, etc.), semiconductor back end (PCB, lead frame, auto-insertion, surface mount pin inspection, etc.) automotive, motor manufacturing, computer hard disk, DVD, and robotics. The Excel’s laser sensor is highly accurate, fast response, and compact in size.

According to a recent internal study, the unfulfilled market for precision laser sensor that Excel will be offering, is expected to reach $70M in 2002. There is no existing supplier that offers similar product. Consequently, the complete precision laser sensor market will be owned by Excel Precision provided the Company launches the marketing campaign immediately.

While the laser interferometer market is mostly owned by Agilent, it have been making little improvement in its product performance and the ease of use of its products. Customers have been complaining about the high price and difficult of use of Agilent products.

Excel’s recent invention of FDF (five degrees of freedom) technique allows the CNC machine calibration users to measure five parameters at once without the changing of optical apparatus. This will result in widespread adoption of our laser interferometer as a "universal" laser at prices only slightly above those of Agilent’s single axis measurement lasers. This application is the primary market that Excel Precision is pursuing. The CNC machine community will enjoy significantly lower sparing costs and better accuracy, resulting in large reductions of Operational Expenditures, Capital Expenditures, and Working Capital.

Excel Precision's Edge

Excel Precision possesses complete optical design and manufacturing capability. We have an in-house He-Ne laser tubes manufacturing facility. The laser tubes have proven MTBF of 75,000 hours. The in-house built laser tubes ensures the system performance and protects the intellectual property of laser technology. The Company also have patents granted for the FDF laser interferometer and the laser sensor technology. The direct cost for laser sensor is very low (35%) comparing to the targeted selling prices. This provides very good gross profit to the Company and allows flexibility of pricing strategy if competition does show up and a price war is initiated. This combination of talent, drive, and market opportunity is sets Excel Precision on a trajectory for extremely strong growth.

Facilities

We are located in the heart of Silicon Valley with an 8,000 sq. ft R&D and manufacturing facility in Santa Clara, California. The company is set for strong growth as it develops and manufactures a range of products based on its own intellectual property.
